Couldn't agree more. That line about "how do you establish institutional credibility on such a limited datasett?" really hit me. It's the core challenge you've articulated so well.

We are working to solve it. Step one is the ecosystem survey that build the categorization we need. Step two is to link to existing datasets to build portfolio level performance tracking. We will need to clean up and verify some of that data, but it will get us a sizable dataset we can use to thoroughly explore the performance of the asset class.

Standards, Governance, and Data solve most of the core challenges in the asset class today.

The core of the survey is gathering the data points to enable us to build from the Venture Studio Index frameworks, metrics, and categorization. We ask about 120 questions, so this is a substantial data set. We do ask for performance, but self reported performance is not ideal for an asset class evaluation. Our next step after the survey is to link up with private data sets that capture captable, investment, and exit data to deliver a more robust asset class performance picture. The survey provides the categories and performance comparables, the 3rd party data provides the performance insights. We know that the performance data is likely to has limitations and errors it will not be a perfect analysis, but it will be substantially more robust than what we have today and closer to what we have in the VC fund space.
